These mission gardens, in present-day San Gabriel, California are well tended today. Though green and plentiful this environment depends on irrigation. When the Anza colonizing expedition arrived this mission consisted of a few crude structures of sticks and mud. San Gabriel was the first Spanish settlement at the end of the long desert march from the interior of present-day Mexico to a northern frontier. |
