Focus of the Lesson
Students will learn about Spanish Explorers; notably about the life of Juan Bautista de Anza and his efforts to colonize throughout the southwest United States and California. They will use the information gathered to create an on-line quiz.
Objectives
1. Students will identify the major Spanish Explorers and the areas they explored.2. Students will understand the purpose of de Anza's explorations.
3. Students will describe the effects of the arrival of Spanish explorers on native peoples of the southwest United States.
4. Students will understand how to create an on-line quiz using Claris HomePage.

Use of Web de Anza
Students will work with a partner or small group to conduct research using the Web de Anza as a major source for information. Students will design a series of web pages to create an on-line quiz accentuating what they learned. Students will select the 'Top Ten' questions to be included on the Web de Anza site.
Use of Scholars-Consultants (optional)
Teacher Activities
Students will be briefed for the project by textbook activities and Internet research skills. The teacher should assign partners or small groups of no more than three students per group. Teacher will assign various topics and subjects to be covered by each group. Each group will be responsible for conducting research on the Internet using the Web de Anza as their major source of information. Each group will be responsible for creating an on-line quiz using Claris HomePage. All teacher directions should meet lesson objectives.

Students will use critical historical inquiry to interpret the past. Topics assigned to students will cover the following:1. identifying the major Spanish Explorers2. investigation into fact or fiction about de Anza
3. time period in United States history
4. geographical reference points
5. topography of the area explored
6. the purpose of de Anza's explorations
7. the expedition's route
8. challenges of the expedition
9. supplies and shortages
10. comparison of Font's Diary entries and those of de Anza
11. the effects of Spanish explorers on native peoples of the southwest United States
12. comparison of de Anza's expeditions and those of other Spanish explorers
13. success or failure of expeditions

Students will be evaluated by their group performance, the presentation of their on-line quiz, and the content of information presented.

ADD BACKGROUND COLOR AND PATTERNS
- From the EDIT Menu, Choose 'Document Options'.
- On the 'Background' side, click and hold the 'Color' button, a dropdown color palette appears.
- Select one of the colors in the palette
OR
- Choose 'Other' at the bottom of the palette window; this opens the color picker where you can set a customized color.
- Click the close box at the top left of the window.
- To return to the default background, click the 'Restore Default Background' button in the 'Document Options' box.
- To remove a background image, click the 'Remove' button in the 'Document Options' box.
ADD BACKGROUND IMAGES
- From the EDIT Menu, choose 'Document Options'.
- Select the 'Appearance' tab.
- In the 'Background' section of the box, click the 'Set' button.
- Locate the image file you wish to use in the 'Select an Image' file menu.
- Click Open.
- A thumbnail of the image appears in the preview window of the 'Document Options' box.
- Click the close box at the top left to close the 'Document Options' box.
- Your page now displays the new background in tiles.
ADD GRAPHICS
There are only two acceptable formats for graphics . . . GIF and JPEG. HomePage automatically converts images to one of these Web-friendly formats.HomePage provides a collection of backgrounds, buttons, animated GIFs, and other art designs to liven up your site.
- From the FILE Menu, select Library.
- A variety of graphics will appear.
- To place the graphic, click on the image, hold down the mouse button; drag the image onto the page.
COPY AND PASTE AN IMAGE
- Open the image you wish to use; this may be from ClarisWorks or from Word.
- Select the image.
- From the EDIT Menu, choose 'Copy'.
- Return to Claris HomePage.
- Place the insertion point where you wish the image to appear.
- From the EDIT Menu, choose, 'Paste'.
- You will be asked to name the file and place it into the default folder for converted images.
- Once you name it, the image appears.
SET A DEFAULT FOLDER, WHERE HOMEPAGE WILL STORE ALL OF YOUR IMAGES
- From the EDIT Menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the IMAGES tab.
- Select the button 'Convert and Save Automatically to Folder'.
- Click the BROWSE button to select a folder where your graphics will be saved.
- Create a folder name HPGraphics.
- Click OK.
ESTABLISHING AN IMAGE ON A PAGE
- Place the insertion point where you want the image to appear.
- From the INSERT Menu, choose 'Image'.
- A dialog box appears where you can find the image file.
- After you've found the image file, click OK.
RESIZE AN IMAGE
- Open the Image Object Editor by double-clicking on the image.
- Select the 'Appearance' tab.
- Enter the new image size in either pixel or as a percent
OR
- Select the handle on the lower right corner of the image, hold down the 'Shift' key and click and drag the image.
- To return an image to its original size, click the 'Original Size' button in the 'Image Object Editor'.
ADD IMAGE BORDERS
- Double-click the image.
- In the 'Object Editor', set the border width in pixels, in the 'Border 'Box enter a number between 1 and 100. The larger the number the larger the size of the border.
- Press 'Return' to see what the border looks like.
ADD TEXT
- Position the insertion point by clicking on your page.
- Type and edit your text as you would in any word processing program.
ALIGN IMAGES
Vertically
- Double-click the image to open the 'Image Object Editor'.
- From the dropdown 'Alignment' Menu, choose 'Top', 'Middle' or 'Bottom'.
- The surrounding text aligns to the 'Top', 'Middle', or 'Bottom' of the image.
Horizontally
- Select the image.
- From the STYLES Toolbar, click 'Align Left', 'Align Center' or 'Align Right'
OR
- From the FORMAT Menu, choose 'Alignment' and choose one of the sub menu options.
ALIGN TEXT
- Place the insertion point into the paragraph.
- From the FORMAT Menu, choose one of the alignment options.
OR
- Use the alignment tools from the toolbar.
CHANGE FONTS
From the STYLE Menu, choose 'Font' 'Size', etc.CHANGE PHYSICAL STYLE
- Select the word or block of text you wish to format.
- Choose one of they physical styles from the STYLE Menu.
COLOR TEXT
- Select the text you wish to change
- From the STYLE Menu, choose 'Text Color'
- Choose one of the predefined colors from either one of the color lists
OR
- Choose 'Other' to open the color dialog box
OR
- Use the color palette from the toolbar.
CREATE BULLETED LISTS
- In EDIT mode, type in the list items, inserting a return at the end of each line.
- Select the entire list.
- From the FORMAT Menu, choose 'Bullet List'
OR
- Select the bulleted list tool from the toolbar.
FORMAT TEXT
- Select the text you wish to format.
- From the FORMAT Menu, choose a style 'Heading'.
- To remove the paragraph style, place the insertion point anywhere in the paragraph, from the FORMAT menu, choose 'Normal'.
INDENT PARAGRAPHS
- Place the insertion point anywhere in the paragraph.
- From the FORMAT Menu, choose 'Increase' or 'Decrease Indent'.
OR
- Use the indent tools from the toolbar.
SAVE
- From the FILE Menu, choose 'Save'.
- When the box appears, name the document
- Click 'OK'.
- Another 'Save' dialog box appears.
- Note the .htm at the end of your document.
- Click 'Save'.
SPELL CHECK
- From the DIT Menu, choose 'Spelling' &endash; Check Spelling.
- Use the spell checker as you would in any word processing program.
- Be sure to use this tool, your site is a reflection of you.
